I agree with you KenS, parents have to adapt and step it up if they want their children to be well raised.
The internet seems to be growing more each day and new 'inventions' are introduced more than ever. Take for instance myspace, facebook, and twitter, to name a few...Today's kids want to follow each latest trend and sign up for everything. Once they do that, which is a very easy process, they spend countless hours online sharing every bit of information about themselves, from pictures, to phone numbers, and much more. Here alone the predators have an open field to play.
As far as the online content...YES it is questionable. But that goes towards everything because as a college student I lost the count of how many times my professors have lectured the students in my classes about not citing inacurate information from questionable sources, such as Wikipedia. It has gotten to the point where most professors do not allow internet references.
Online shopping seems to have evolved so much that I can imagine children clicking a few too many 'submit' buttons and causing some major trouble. Of course not all sites are as easily accessed, kudos to the ones who remain under strict security.

The words "snoop" and "spy" in regards to, what is in essence, KNOWING WHAT YOUR KIDS ARE DOING ONLINE... is utter BS!!! If you are person that thinks knowing what your kids are doing online and being a responsible 21st century parent is considered 'spying', then give up. You've already lost. Your kids run the house and you have no authority.

Your reasons to monitor are spot on. It’s too bad that most parents don't want to recognize and understand these threats and stick to the old faithful line of doom ""that wouldn't happen to my kids"

Just remember, in most cases, it is the kids seeking out trouble and taking risks because... are you ready for this - THEY ARE KIDS!

Be the adult.
